Cleaning Salt Cells with Calcinex
Another good use for Calcinex is to remove calcium scale from a salt cell. It has now been confirmed by Dr Alfons Nestl at BAYROL that this is acceptable and won’t damage the BAYROL salt cell.
How to clean a salt cell using Calcinex:
Mix a solution of Calcinex and water in a bucket and submerge the disconnected BAYROL salt cell in there for around 10 – 15 minutes. After this time the scale is softened and can easily be removed by gently tapping the cell and by using a plastic scraper (a cable tie has been found to work well!) to remove it.
Calcinex can then be added to the pool water (300ml per 10m3) to help prevent calcium scaling in the future on the cell, slatted cover, walls and floor etc.
FYI On salt chlorinators (all brands) installed in hard water areas, scale often builds up too quickly and/or more stubbornly on the plates that produce the chlorine than the units ‘self cleaning’ (reversing polarity) feature can prevent. If the cell is scaled chlorine production is reduced. Previously people would have been using an acid based cell cleaner to remove scale build up – this creates fumes and requires PPE, takes longer and plates can be damaged if left in an acid solution for too long.
